Finding purpose and making meaning of it all

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Another intrinsic human quality lies in the pursuit of meaning and the inherent need to find a sense of value and worth in our lives. Having a purpose in life serves as a guiding light, enabling individuals to focus on what truly matters, especially in the face of significant challenges or adversity. It is having a sense of connection to something greater than ourselves.

Discovering meaning or purpose varies greatly from person to person. It may be through our profession, a commitment to a social or political cause, creative pursuits, or religious and spiritual beliefs. It can be found in a career or expressed through extracurricular, volunteer, or community activities.

A sense of meaning is deeply rooted in personal values, and those who report having a purpose in life tend to enjoy longer lives, greater life satisfaction, and fewer health issues.

Here are some ways to build meaning:

  • Engage with a cause or organisation which aligns with your values or that matters to you. You might want to revisit your happy list, and your strengths survey for ideas.

  • Explore new creative activities to discover connections that resonate with you.

  • Reflect on how your passions and talents can be used to make a positive impact on others.

  • Dedicate quality time to nurturing relationships with the people you care about.

What are you doing currently that creates meaning in your life? How could this be nurtured? After all, who could argue with living a longer, healthier and happier life?
